There are three main types of positions in a holdem game, the early position, the last position and the middle position. Each position has its advantages and disadvantages. However, like everything else it is the way we make use of the information we have that is important.
The first is the early position and this pertains to the three players to the left of the big blind. The big blind being the largest blind posted prior to the dealing of the cards.
It is usually the player sitting two seats to the left of the dealer. This means that two of the positions in the early position are part of the big blind. Since players on the early position are the first to act, players on this seat should be more selective in their starting hands, as they do not have much information about the other player’s actions after them.
However, there are some advantages with this position. Players in this position have more opportunities to check-raise. Check-raising is when a player waives his right to bet until a bet has been made by another player.
The player can then increase the bet by an equal amount when it is his turn to act.

Another advantage is the opportunity to collect three bets by simply betting and re-raising.
Raising the bet before the middle and last position. Making a call is another advantage for players on the early position. This is done as a strategy by players, so as to intimidate the other players in to giving up the game early.
The second position in holdem is the late position, which is the two players to the right of the blinds. Players on the last position hold an interesting tactical advantage over those at the early position.
Since players in the late position are one of the last to act, they have the luxury of watching and learning how the other players act before them. This in turn makes the players decision easier.
Also, players in the late position have the advantage of calling a bet without the fear of a raise from a player after you. Players on this seat position also benefit from reacting to the kind of hand the players from the early and middle positions have previously shown.
The disadvantage of players in this position is facing check-raises made by the players before them.
Those players seated between the early and late positions are situated in the middle position. Players in this area do not have the luxury of calling a bet in comparison to that of the players in the last position.
This is due to the fact that they run the risk of being raised by players in the last position. Middle position players either have to throw away a potentially winning hand or take the risk. Players on the middle position can also raise the same hands as that of the players on the early position.
In the middle position, players can act later on each betting round thereby having more chances to play more hands.
