How to Read the Board in Texas Holdem

Holdem is the most popular of the community card poker games attaining worldwide popularity. One of the more important skills a player in holdem should learn, particularly a beginner, is reading the board. In holdem poker, the board refers to the five community cards that every player can use to make up their final hand. Since holdem is played with community cards turned up for all players to openly see, players can easily determine the best possible hand that can be made from the board cards as well as the two unseen cards which they have on hand.

Acquiring this skill is vitally important as an experienced player would have an idea or a feeling of how strong his own hand is in comparison to the hands of the other players. It is from analyzing the board that a player can make a sound decision on what to do next. It is extremely important to note that when playing holdem you should think of your hand relative to the board.

There are several things to look for when assessing or reading the board. The first thing to check; does the board have pairs. If there are pairs on the board, there is the the possibility of creating a Four-of-a-Kind. Four-of-a-Kind; when a player holds four cards of the same face value. Having pairs on the board may also mean a Full House is possible, so it is important that when the board shows pairs one should pay attention carefully. If there are no pairs on the board then a Four-of-a-Kind is not possible.

Aside from the pairs on the board, you should also check to see if there are three cards of the same suit on the board or if there is three of a suit. Even if the suits are not particularly notable these three cards can be potentially part of a flush. If the board also has cards in sequence, one should also be aware of this. Cards in sequence may be part of a straight hand particularly if there are only two holes in a string of consecutive cards. Holes refer to the missing cards in a sequence.

Say 9-J-Q is the sequence then the holes would be 10 and K. One of the players may be holding the missing card in the sequence. It is also vital that you know your own cards, allowing you to eliminate some of the possible combinations that may come into play. Learning all the combinations will increase your ability to deduce those cards.

The first decision you normally take is based on the knowledge of the value of your own two cards. Other things to consider when reading a board are the suit of the cards on the board. For beginners, you should be able to understand the ranking of each individual card. The cards highest to lowest are as follows: ace, king, queen, jack, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three and two.

Once you have gotten the hang of reading the board then you will be able to realize what possible hands might be out there and which hands are not possible. One should note though, that it is only through getting involved in several games that one can expertly read the board of a holdem. It is gaining the experience that can leave you with the true feel for holdem strategy.
